LA Wildfire Resources

My heart goes out to all of the people, plants, animals and the land harmed in the horrifying LA Fires. This has been a massive collective trauma for those impacted, and with traumatic events, comes a need for healing, repair and restoration.

The Los Angeles County Psychological Association has assembled an extensive list of resources here. The list includes contact numbers for survivors to locate shelter (Red Cross), get up-do-date fire information, and even includes how to talk with children about the fires. Additionally, if you’re a provider interested in offering pro bono therapy, you can sign up there, too. It really is an extensive list!

If you’ve suffered a loss of property in this or any fire, and need help with your insurance, United Policyholders is a consumer-advocacy resource in addition to the California Department of Insurance.

Lastly, I am sharing two resources I have discovered in recent years as I’ve watched wildfires burn through places I love. The first is Dr. Daniel Swain, who is a brilliant climate scientist who helps explain weather and climate impacts to our communities on his website, Weather West. Finally, I am sharing Zeke Lunder’s website called, The Lookout. Zeke is a seasoned firefighter and a “Pyrogeographer.” Zeke has a ton of specialization in mapping and understanding forestry and fire behavior, plus he detests misinformation. If you live in a community in the WUI, you’ll find information on using prescriptive fire on The Lookout. I have found these two guys to be very reliable sources of fire-related information, and they both offer frequent livestreams on YouTube during fires..

As always, feel free to contact me if you’d like to talk further. Be well and take care out there.
