Is Dirt the New Prozac?
Many folks are stressed, anxious, and/or depressed these days. Though some find relief from psychotropic medication, I am intrigued to read about the variety of ways people care for themselves and cope with difficult emotions.
This is an interesting read about the ways that gardening might act as a natural anti-depressant (Note: this is not the most rigorous study!!).
What is even more interesting, is that scientists are finding that it is the actual soil microbes in the dirt which apparently are lifting moods! “Antidepressant microbes in soil cause cytokine levels to rise, which results in the production of higher levels of serotonin.”
Life can be challenging, and it behooves all of us to find the things which bring peace and joy and connection, and to do them.
Here’s to finding ways to connect with dirt, nature and life!
